Cashmere fibre is classed on the basis of its colour, diameter and length, and its contrast to the coarser guard hair. The highest-quality fibre (top) is classed as super white. It is less than 16.5 microns (millionths of a metre) diameter, and has white guard hair. White fibre (centre) has some grey, black or ginger guard hairs; grey fibre (bottom) is off-white with coloured guard hair.
