Descendants of Pūhoi settlers at the town’s 50th anniversary, 1913

German Bohemians originally from Staab (now part of the Czech Republic) were tested to the limit by poverty and tribulation. The two tenets they clung to – loyalty to the Catholic Church and a willingness to help their neighbours – enabled them to carve farms from the bushlands of the Pūhoi River.
