Story: Fungi
Some of New Zealand’s native fungi are listed as endangered or threatened species. They include a truffle-like fungus known as Fischer’s egg (Claustula fischeri, top), and a large bracket fungus (bottom).
Fischer’s egg is found at two places in New Zealand and a few in Tasmania. It produces spores within a white, egg-shaped body that is enclosed in a brown, gelatinous cover.
The rare Ganoderma is a wood-rotting bracket fungus known from three collections on pukatea (Laurelia novae-zelandiae). It has not been seen since 1972 and is possibly extinct.
