Banded kōkopu are found mostly in pools in small, cool streams, often in podocarp–broadleaf forest.
Canterbury mudfish live in weedy springs and around wetland margins.
Kōaro are widespread and live in varied habitats. They favour clear-running streams that flow over pebbles.
Upland bullies are found in many different habitats, including large gravelly rivers.
