French artists often sailed with explorers, producing detailed work that included depictions of Māori life and customs. Here the artist Barthelemy Lauvergne, who visited on a corvette with Captain Laplace in 1831, has shown Māori assisting French sailors to haul fishing lines at Kororāreka (Russell).
