Mesozoic rocks

Mesozoic fossils date from 251 to 65 million years ago. Sedimentary rocks that were deposited in the Mesozoic seas are common in many parts of the country. Marine fossils are common, while fossilised remains of New Zealand’s Mesozoic land life is rare. (This map shows all Mesozoic rocks in New Zealand, although not all of them contain fossils.)
