Story: Fossils

Fossil outcrop

Fossil outcrop

White shells (inset photo) stand out in this outcrop of mudstone near Castlecliff at the mouth of the Whanganui River. Fossils are often found in river beds and along the coast. Water and waves are constantly eroding rocks, exposing fresh outcrops in these environments.
