The boiler at Lake Rerewhakaaitu School now burns wood pellets instead of coal. Unlike coal, wood pellets are carbon-neutral, clean to work with, and do not emit sulfur dioxide. A pilot project is converting the central heating systems of schools in the Rotorua area from coal to wood pellets.
