Canned food

Canned food

The technology for canning food was available in the late 1800s but it was not very reliable. Cans were heavy and not easy to carry, and few people owned cars. Many women bottled their own fruit and preserves. Canned-food consumption increased after 1940. These women are shopping at a Woolworths supermarket in 1964, by which time a wide range of canned goods were available.
