Story: Fishing industry
A country’s fishing grounds are known as its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). New Zealand's boundary is shown in blue. Within its zone, New Zealand has the power to manage fisheries and set fishing regulations and quotas. The EEZ came into effect in 1978, when fishing grounds were extended from 12 to 200 nautical miles offshore. New Zealand’s area is huge – some 4 million square kilometres.
