Clean Streams Accord

In 2005 Fonterra (New Zealand’s largest dairy co-operative) made an agreement with regional councils and others to reduce nutrient contamination of waterways by dairy farms. Farmers are obliged to fence off drains, streams and wetlands within their property, and to undertake nutrient budgeting to reduce their fertiliser use and minimise the likelihood of nutrient leakage.
