Story: Farming and the environment
Fire was used to clear dense tussock, particularly on the east coast of the South Island. By the mid-20th century, limitations were placed on this practice to minimise erosion, and permits were required before runholders could burn an area. This block is near Aoraki/Mt Cook, which can be seen on the right.
