Story: Exotic forestry
This watercolour of the Kāingaroa plains near Waiotapu, in the central North Island, shows how the area looked before large-scale forest planting. Little apart from grass and scrub grew in the inhospitable climate, and the sparse vegetation made it relatively easy to establish forest plantations.
