‘Baker’s Saddle – Strackon Glacier’

As well as being an outstanding bushman, Charlie Douglas was a proficient artist. This view of the Strauchon Glacier, in a northern tributary of the Copland River, looks towards Aoraki/Mt Cook, with Mt La Perouse to the left. Douglas probably painted this scene when he was searching the Copland valley in the 1890s for a mule track to the Hermitage hotel.
