Story: European discovery of New Zealand
Unlike the previous image, painted at the time of Cook’s visit to Dusky Sound, this more romantic representation was painted in oils by William Hodges after his return to England. During his stay in the sound, Cook established an observatory to help him fix New Zealand’s position accurately. It was also a chance for Cook to observe the landscape and vegetation, and to make contact with a Māori family living there.
