Story: Estuaries
Surrounded by coastal forest, Whanganui Inlet is an enclosed, drowned river valley, 13 kilometres long and up to 3 kilometres wide. Its extensive areas of seagrass, salt marshes and tidal mudflats provide a rich habitat for 42 species of wetland birds, 35 species of fish, and an abundance of marine invertebrates.
