Road signs

Road signs

Before 1987, motorists were warned about a landslide crossing or undercutting the road with a sign saying ‘SLIPS’. This tended to confuse tourists, who often did not know what it meant even if they spoke English. The symbolic sign depicting rocks sliding down a hill was introduced in 1987 as part of a move towards standardising New Zealand road signs with international signs.
