Cook Islands artist Paul Tangata is shown here with two of his paintings in 2012. On the left is one of his recent works; on the right is Landscape, painted in 1965. Tangata went to Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland, and was one of two Pacific artists exhibiting in the mid-1960s. The two paintings were being shown in Home AKL, Auckland Art Gallery's first survey of the city's Polynesian art scene. Like the rest of New Zealand's major art galleries, the Auckland Art Gallery was publicly funded.
