The English in New Zealand and in the UK, 1861–2001
These graphs compare the number of English-born people in New Zealand as a proportion of all those born in the United Kingdom with the proportions of the English in the United Kingdom population. The years are census years. After 1921 those born in the Republic of Ireland are not included. The graph shows that although the English have always been numerous in New Zealand, the country has been less English than the United Kingdom. It also shows that the English were clearly under-represented during the important migration flows of the 1860s and 1870s.
