Runner Peter Snell crosses the line to win the 800 metres at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Snell, at this time a rank outsider, came in just ahead of world-record-holder Roger Moens of Belgium. New Zealand runners made an excellent showing at Rome, a tribute to the coaching techniques of Arthur Lydiard, who trained Snell, as well as 5,000-metres gold-medallist Murray Halberg and marathon bronze-medallist Barry Magee.
