Story: Electoral systems
This interactive shows the number of seats held by each political party following elections from the introduction of the mixed-member proportional (MMP) voting system in 1996 to 2011. The effect of MMP is to lessen the dominance of the major parties. In none of these elections did one party gain a majority of parliamentary seats. Instead a government was formed in every case either through a coalition of parties or through agreements between smaller parties and the largest party.
