Red beech forest
Red beech (Nothofagus fusca) is the least cold-tolerant of New Zealand’s four species of southern beech – the others can grow in chilly alpine areas and poor soils. Red beech favours warm, lower to mid-altitude slopes (seldom reaching the treeline), and is mostly restricted to deep, fertile, well-drained soils.
