Kauri forest

Kauri forest

‘The Mountain's Crown, Kauri Bush, Whangaroa' was painted by Charles Blomfield in 1918. Much of the northern region was once covered largely in kauri forest. Acid litter from the kauri (Agathis australis) produced the well-known gumland soils, which are infertile and acidic.
