Antipodes Island has been colonised twice by parakeets of the genus Cyanoramphus. Ancestors of the Antipodes Island parakeet (Cyanoramphus unicolor) are thought to have arrived around 280,000 years ago, and ancestors of Reischek's parakeet (C. novaezelandiae hochstetteri), a subspecies of the red-crowned parakeet, some 30,000 years ago. They probably came from the New Zealand mainland, where related species live.
