Active Earth: Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences
On the website of the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, this page links to information on New Zealand earthquakes, and to Hazard Watch (http://www.hazardwatch.co.nz), a weekly review of natural hazard events.
-
Earthquake Commission – EQC
The Earthquake Commission (EQC) site outlines coverage given by the Earthquake Commission, and includes frequently asked questions and research papers. The site also includes sections on modifying or ‘quakesafeing’ your home to minimise earthquake damage.
-
GeoNet
This website includes information on the GeoNet network of instruments and data centres for monitoring natural hazards. It presents the location of the latest and recent earthquakes, and seismic drums showing activity at a number of stations throughout New Zealand, and you can also report any earthquakes.
-
New Zealand Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale
The Modified Mercalli (MM) scale is used for measuring the intensity of earthquakes felt by human observers of the ground surface. This version, on the GeoNeT website, has been modified for New Zealand building conditions.
-
New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management
This site includes useful information on safety and preparedness for various emergencies, including earthquakes.
-
Quake trackers
Linking from the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences website, this site is designed for secondary school students. It includes classroom projects, reports on the latest earthquakes, a photo gallery, and FAQs.

Tectonic and earthquake risk zoning
This paper (PDF, 0.7 MB) was the first attempt to show that some parts of New Zealand are more susceptible to earthquakes than others, based largely on geological evidence. It was strongly opposed by a number of geophysicists, who argued that the conclusions were not supported by historical seismicity. It was published in the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand (1965).
