Following the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, new building codes and construction measures designed to ensure earthquake resistance were put in place. Buildings constructed in accordance with the codes have not yet been fully tested by a large earthquake near a major city, but they have generally performed well in smaller earthquakes.
