Story: Dune lands
Rabbit and Rough islands, which guard the estuary of the Waimea River in Nelson, were once dune lands. Planting of pines began in 1921, and these sand islands are now covered in forests. Conversion to forestry and farmland is the main way that active dune lands have been lost in New Zealand.
