Kauri gum from New Zealand (2nd of 3)
This woman, one of the last inhabitants in the Dalmatian village of Gornje Živogošće, is shown with pieces of kauri gum from New Zealand. Especially beautiful pieces were sent home by those working the gumfields to show their relatives the source of their livelihood. The arrival of money, and the tales of those who had returned, gave many Dalmatian villagers a false impression of life in New Zealand. They did not see the days of toil in swamps and the long evenings spent scraping gum.
