Mission station, Rangihoua, 1830

Mission station, Rangihoua, 1830

This painting shows New Zealand's first mission station, at Rangihoua, Bay of Islands, around 1830. The local chief Ruatara's houses and cultivations are on the steep hill to the left, while the missionary buildings are on the shore at right. This image was painted on glass in about 1850 and based on early oil paintings. It was used in a type of slide projector, to show British audiences the work their missionaries were carrying out overseas.
