National and forest parks
These tables list the national and forest parks in 2007. Although there are fewer national parks than forest parks, they cover a larger area of New Zealand’s protected land. Forest parks did not exist until the establishment of Tararua Forest Park, in 1954. They include much of the main axial ranges of the North Island, and a number of areas on the eastern slopes of the Southern Alps.
