Marine invertebrate collection

New Zealand’s largest collection of marine invertebrates (animals without backbones) is held at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in Wellington. Specimens come from all marine areas, from the intertidal zone to the deep sea. Collection manager Anne-Nina Lörz holds a giant starfish. Many organisms with soft body parts are stored in bottles with preservative.
