Story: Coastal shoreline
The North Island’s windswept black-sand beaches stretch for 750 kilometres north from Pātea to the north-east tip at North Cape. The sands are coloured by the iron-rich mineral titanomagnetite, which originates from the volcanic rocks of the North Island and is concentrated on the beaches.
