Story: Coastal shoreline
Coarse sand and gravel beaches are common along the east coast of New Zealand. This beach at Puketā is fed with gravels and sand swept down the Kahutara River from the seaward Kaikōura mountains. Mixed sand and gravel beaches are harsh environments and few plants or animals make their home there.
