This map illustrates the varied nature of New Zealand’s shores. From north to south: Cape Rēinga – white sandy bays and rocky headlands; Whatipu Beach – black sand; Mokotahi – soft sandstone cliffs and white beaches; Granity Beach – mixed gravel and sand; Purakanui Inlet – estuary with extensive intertidal mudflats; Doubtful Sound – steep vegetated cliffs and deep fiords; Doughboy Bay – resistant rocky coast.
