The scaly-headed triplefin (Karalepis stewarti) is endemic to New Zealand and is found from the Three Kings Islands to the Snares. It is one of at least 27 triplefin species found in New Zealand. The scaly-headed triplefin grows to about 15 centimetres and is found in rocky reefs, especially around boulders and crevices in depths of up to 30 metres, but usually within 10 metres of the surface.
