Mottled triplefin

The mottled triplefin (Forsterygion malcolmi) is endemic to New Zealand. It is one of at least 25 triplefin species found in New Zealand and most of them (possibly all) are found nowhere else. The mottled triplefin grows to about 14 centimetres and is found in reefs, especially around boulders and crevices in depths of 10–25 metres. This individual was photographed near the Open Bay Islands which lie off the Okuru River mouth on the West Coast.
