Storm damage
This view of Paekakariki, on the Kapiti coast, shows the damage caused by high seas in July 1978. The wooden sea wall has been built in an attempt to stop the dunes (and the houses behind them) being undermined by the sea. Such engineering methods, however, are usually ineffective. A better option is to stabilise dunes by planting sand-binding vegetation.
