Storage of carbon dioxide in oil reservoirs

This diagram shows a possible solution to one of the major disadvantages of the use of coal – it cannot be burnt without producing carbon dioxide, a major cause of global warming. The solution is to channel the carbon dioxide into deep-water reservoirs or into used oil and gas chambers. It has been suggested that this may be a future use for the Māui gas field once it is dry.
