Story: Coal and coal mining

Advertisement for Solid Energy, 2005

Advertisement for Solid Energy, 2005

Solid Energy is a state-owned enterprise, the successor to State Coal Mines, and in 2005 was producing about 4 million tonnes of coal a year. This advertisement appeared in 2005, when the rising price of oil and the imminent exhaustion of Māui gas supplies made coal appear a more attractive energy option for New Zealand. The major obstacle for future use was atmospheric pollution from coal-burning, and advertisements such as this one were designed to associate coal with bright, clear and clean air.
