Story: Coal and coal mining

Rail bridge across the Waikato

Rail bridge across the Waikato

In 1916 a rail bridge was built across the Waikato River, which opened up coal mining in the western hills. Mines grew at Pukemiro, Rotowaro, Glen Afton, Waikokowai, Renown and Glen Massey. Coal was shipped across the river by barge in the days before the bridge. In 1911 this ceremony marked the driving of the bridge's first pile.
