By the early 1890s it was evident that New Zealand was becoming an urban society. Increasing mechanisation was making farming less labour-intensive, diminishing job prospects and visions of closer rural settlement. Meanwhile, widening work and leisure opportunities in towns and cities were attracting ever more people. The 1911 Census showed for the first time more people living in urban than rural areas, a trend that became more pronounced during the 20th century.
