Story: Citrus, berries, exotic fruit and nuts
The edible seeds of chestnuts are enclosed within a prickly covering, called a burr. In autumn the burrs split open and release the chestnuts to the ground. European and Japanese chestnuts have been grown in New Zealand for over a century, but it is only since the 1990s that an industry has developed.
