‘Alien’ naturalisation

In the 19th century, non-Britons (‘aliens’) were free to enter and live in New Zealand. From 1844 they could take the further step of becoming naturalised British subjects. In 1905 German-born Eleonore Blumhardt, a domestic servant living in Kamo, was granted naturalisation. She had come to New Zealand in 1895 with her father and four brothers.
