Story: Child abuse

Christchurch Civic Creche

In 1992 early childhood education teacher Peter Ellis and four women co-workers at the Christchurch Civic Creche were charged with sexually abusing children in their care. This news report from 1992 was made when the charges had just been laid.

Charges against the women were dropped, but Ellis was convicted and spent seven years in prison. He was released in 2000, still maintaining his innocence. Ellis’s conviction was quashed posthumously by the Supreme Court in 2022.
