The Austro-Hungarian Empire
For most of the 19th century, much of Central and South-east Europe was ruled from Vienna, the seat of the old Hapsburg Empire. In 1867 the union of Austria and Hungary created the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which included people of many different nationalities. After the First World War, the empire was divided into the separate countries of Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia.
