Chart of Southern Ocean

Chart of Southern Ocean

This chart was published in 1828 by J. W. Norie & Co. of London. It was a navigation chart for skippers who were sailing along the Great Circle Route. However, the Auckland and Campbell island groups to the south of New Zealand were poorly drawn and not located with precision. Given this, it was not surprising that at least nine ships were wrecked on the Auckland Islands in the period up to 1907.
