Story: Unpaid domestic work

Men’s unpaid work

Men’s unpaid work

In Nevile Lodge’s 1965 cartoon a man tells his paint-pot-carrying neighbour, ‘I’m warning you Harry, I’ve got big plans for racing and bowls this weekend, so don’t let me catch you setting a good example where my wife can see you.’ Long weekends, such as Labour Weekend and Queen’s Birthday, have traditionally been a time when working men are expected to get stuck into household projects.
