Earthquake-damaged spire
In 1888 an earthquake centred north of the Amuri district damaged many buildings. It also caused the top of the spire on the Anglican Cathedral at the heart of Christchurch to collapse. Here the spire is being reconstructed. The top of the spire was damaged in two more earthquakes. The 1888 earthquake was one of several significant tremors caused by movement along faults.
