Story: Canterbury places
The Christchurch Arts Centre occupies the Gothic stone buildings that once housed the University of Canterbury. A new campus was completed in the suburb of Ilam in the 1970s. The Arts Centre is a major tourist attraction, with shops, galleries, theatres, cinemas, bars and cafes. There is a weekend art, craft and produce market, and festivals and special events take place throughout the year.
