Story: Canterbury places
Most Canterbury rivers have braided shingle beds. Three, including the Waimakariri, have glaciers at their heads. Braided rivers are formed when sediment and gravel are carried down the river and deposited to form flat basins between the mountains and coastal plains. They are an important habitat for wading birds.
