Story: Canoe traditions
The Te Aratauwhāiticanoe, captained by Tīwakawaka, landed at Whakatāne. It beached at Ōpihi Spit (the full name is Ōpihi-whanaunga-kore), at the entrance to the harbour. The photograph is taken from Kaputerangi, above present-day Whakatāne, where the people of the canoe built a pā.
